“The practical completion inspection has been conducted by the consultant and we are in final stages of completion,” Mr Singh said.

“We will have a stakeholder meeting to discuss our policy and the stall fees and those who applied first will be given first chance.

“The master list is already. There are more than 80 vendors who applied however that number has gone down to 60.”

Food vendor, Lusiana Mere, said she hoped the night market would also cater for day vendors who still have food sell.

The Coalition Government has begun the process to complete the Lautoka swimming pool project with consultants and project managers to be appointed soon to oversee the works.

The Ministry of Local Government is now looking for interested companies for the tender for consultancy services, redesign, documentation and project management services for the swimming pool located at the Botanical Gardens, Lautoka.

The cost of the yet-to-be-completed pool had escalated from the initial budgeted amount of $2million to $12.6million.

Government has set aside $4.5million in the 2023/2024 national budget for the completion of works.

“The project would resume from where it was halted, with key components including the finalisation of the buildings, refurbishment of the pool and its surrounding areas, acquisition and installation of filtration systems, and necessary accessories, including a three-phase power supply,” Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan said in July.

He said to procure items from overseas, a tender process would be initiated, taking into account awarding, shipment, and delivery times, all of which would be incorporated into the project timeline.

“Overall, the council anticipates a completion time of approximately 10 to 11 months,” Mr Khan said.

The Lautoka Swimming Pool Project is on track to be finished by the middle of next year, according to Mohammed Anees Khan, the chief executive officer of the Lautoka City Council. Khan expressed his delight after an announcement that $4.5 million has been allocated to ensure the completion of the long-awaited project.

“The planning for the resumption of the project is currently underway in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government,” Khan revealed.

He further detailed that the project would resume from where it was halted, with key components including the finalization of the buildings, refurbishment of the pool and its surrounding areas, acquisition and installation of filtration systems, and necessary accessories, including a three-phase power supply.

To procure items from overseas, a tender process will be initiated, taking into account awarding, shipment, and delivery times, all of which will be incorporated into the project timeline.

“Overall, the council anticipates a completion time of approximately 10 to 11 months,” Khan added.

During a recent post-budget discussion held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad revealed that $7 million has already been spent on the project. However, work on the pool itself remains incomplete.

Prof Prasad announced that the Coalition Government has pledged an additional $4.5 million to ensure the project’s successful conclusion. Once finished, the swimming pool is expected to serve the residents of Lautoka, local communities, schools, swimming clubs, professional athletes, and visiting sports teams.

The eagerly anticipated completion of the Lautoka Swimming Pool Project will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to the local community and promote a healthier and more active lifestyle for all stakeholders involved.

There are no pending legal issues in relation to the controversial Lautoka swimming pool project with all parties involved withdrawing their cases against the Lautoka City Council, said Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.

He has stated this in a written response to a question that was tabled in the March Parliament sitting on the current legal status of the publicly funded Lautoka swimming pool project that had an initial budget of $2 million in 2015 which increased to $12.6 million two years later.

“The variation in the cost of the project arose when the initial concept was amended. The initial project was for two swimming pools with a FINA-compliant competition pool (50m x 8 lanes) and a community pool of 25m x 6 lanes,” said Mr Nalumisa.

“The estimated cost for the initial project design was $2 million.

“The budget for the new concept proposal after several site visits and site meetings increased to $3 million and then to $7.8 million.

“The Lautoka City Council and the lead consultant executed the consultancy agreement for the swimming pool development on 18 December 2017, when the project cost had escalated to $12.6 million due to further changes in scope.”

He said in 2020, LCC had terminated the contract of the Project Consultant and Contractors due to the delay in work and not meeting project timelines for completion.

“Since 2020, there has been no construction undertaken at the site, as all the parties involved agreed to have a peer review exercise undertaken.

“In 2022, the peer review was done and the report is currently with the Fiji Government, which is being discussed with LCC to formulate a feasible way forward for the completion of the project.”

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Katamotu Nalumisa and Assistant Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua met with Lautoka City Council and Ba Town Council recently to have a collective brief on issues and projects that is lined up for the year.

The main challenge that was part of the discussion was pluvial flooding in Ba and so far the town has been flooded six times in this new year alone.

The town councils have been advised by the Minister to make urgent assessments to improve drainage and flooding in Ba town which is heavily affecting those who daily commute into town and affects businesses as well.

The Council has been using multi-agency approaches to work on mitigating measures related to drainage, flooding and other developments and upgrades.

The Minister acknowledged the work that had been achieved to date and emphasised the critical importance of working together as a team in moving the organisations forward.

Both Ministers also had a thorough briefing on Lautoka Swimming pool project by Lautoka City Council while on a tour to visit Town Councils and projects in the Western Division.

The swimming pool has been a longstanding issue of discussion among residents and authorities since its announcement in 2015.

The Minister has called to have focused priorities and set timelines to move the project forward after there is a decision on peer review report and clear recommendations are provided.

Located at the Botanical Gardens, the aquatic centre was also planned to include a pavilion to allow the facility to host international swimming competitions.
