Economic Activities

Lautoka is known as the Sugar City because of its sugar cane belt areas. The main Lautoka Sugar Mill was founded in 1903, and is the city’s biggest employer by far. Built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company (Fiji) (CSR) by workers from India and the Solomon Islands between 1899 and 1903, it hires some 1,300 employees today. Other industries include timber milling, garment manufacturing, distillery, brewery, jewellery, blending, steelworks, fishing, hatchery, domestic items, paints, and construction. In 2012 Lautoka was announced as the administrative capital of the western division.

Lautoka as an Investment City

Lautoka City is the progressive city. Being a progressive city, with the second largest port of entry makes Lautoka an ideal place for your investments. Many local and foreign companies have made their mark in Lautoka. Such investments include the establishment of Punjas flour and Biscuit’s factory, Pacific Cables, Amex offshore marine mining, Tappoos City Complex and the list goes on. Most of these investments are located within the range of Port of Lautoka.

Lautoka is not only an industrial hub but also a clean and environmentally conscious city, featuring a botanical garden, a children’s park, and a decorated main street, Vitogo Parade. The municipal market and numerous tourist destinations, including Abaca, island resorts, and the Vuda Point marina, add to its charm.

The city offers diverse shopping options along Vitogo Parade, Naviti Street, and Yasawa Street, with a range of retail and wholesale shops. Lautoka also has a variety of restaurants and five commercial banks, ensuring convenience for residents and visitors alike.

Sporting facilities in Lautoka include golf courses, soccer, rugby, cricket, and hockey grounds, as well as multipurpose courts for netball, volleyball, basketball, and tennis. Entertainment options are plentiful, with cinemas, social clubs, and children’s play centers.

Lautoka’s annual Sugar Festival in September is a major cultural event. Historically, Vuda Point near Lautoka is believed to be the landing site of the first Fijians, adding to the city’s historical significance.
